Baguio City Strengthens Commitment in Cornea and Eye Donation

BAGUIO CITY — In celebration of Sight Saving Month, the Department of Health – Center for Health Development (CAR), Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center in partnership with Eye Bank Foundation conducted a social awareness forum on cornea and eye donation yesterday, August 09, 2019 at the City Travel Hotel, Baguio City.

The Philippine National Police along with representatives and officials from its departments and agencies in Cordillera Administrative Region actively participated in the activity.

Eye Bank’s President and CEO, Dra. Minguita Padilla, discussed how the partnership with the Philippine National Police helps Eye Bank in the facilitation and promotion of eye tissue retrieval and organ donation.

Dra. Padilla noted that the Philippine National Police has been supporting the Eye Bank in addressing corneal blindness in the country since 1996.

Mr. Jade Malicdan, Baguio General Hospital Eye Tissue Retrieval Unit Coordinator, shared the experiences, challenges, and success stories of Baguio General Hospital in cornea and eye donation.

Since July this year, there has been an influx of volunteer donations coming from Baguio General Hospital, making Baguio City one of the most active cities in corneal donation.

Councilor Arthur Allad-iw, representing the Office of the City Mayor, warmly expressed the City’s gratitude to the Eye Bank Team for having its advocacy and program in Baguio City.

In response, he said that the Baguio City Government will support Eye Bank Foundation and Baguio General Hospital’s cause in sharing the gift of sight in whatever capacity they have especially in terms of legislation.

To symbolize its continuing commitment in strengthening the relationship between Baguio City, Baguio General Hospital, and the people of Cordillera, Eye Bank presented tokens of gratitude to the PNP – Regional chief, Office of the City Mayor, and the Baguio City Health Office.
